How Swedish VAT works

Sweden has three VAT rates. 25 percent is the standard rate and applies to most goods and services. 12 percent applies to, among other things, food, restaurant and catering services, and hotels. 6 percent applies to, among other things, books, newspapers, and passenger transport. Which rate applies depends on what is being sold, always check the Swedish Tax Agency's current rules for your specific situation.

If you invoice regularly with several different VAT rates on the same invoice, this is a good starting point, but in practice, invoicing software calculates VAT per line automatically, without you doing it by hand. Read more in our guide on invoicing software or on what an invoice must include.

FAQ

What VAT rates exist in Sweden?

Sweden has three VAT rates: 25 percent (the standard rate for most goods and services), 12 percent (including food, restaurants, and hotels), and 6 percent (including books, magazines, and passenger transport).

How do I calculate VAT on a price excluding VAT?

Multiply the price excluding VAT by the VAT rate. At 25 percent VAT on 1,000 SEK, the VAT amount is 250 SEK, and the total is 1,250 SEK.

How do I calculate VAT if I only have the price including VAT?

Divide the total by (1 + the VAT rate). At 25 percent VAT, divide by 1.25. The difference between the total and that result is the VAT amount.
